About the CFD 2030 IC
Our Mission
Promote a community of practice
engaged in developing methods, models, physical experiments, software,
and hardware for revolutionary advances in computational simulation
technologies for analysis, design, certification, and qualification of
aerospace systems
Guide the leveraging and integration of enabling technologies
such as high-performance computing, physical modeling, numerical
methods, geometry/grids, validation quality experiments,
multidisciplinary analysis and optimization, with quantified
uncertainties, to expand computational simulation capabilities.
Communicate
with other AIAA committees and communities to assure that IC membership
engages with their peers and external constituencies in shaping the
future of simulation-based engineering.
Ensure CFD is an integral component of the Digital
Transformation of engineering by advocating for its advancement
toward the Vision 2030.
Our Organization
The CFD Vision 2030 Integration Committee is a volunteer committee of the
American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics
(AIAA)
within the Integration and Outreach Division
(IOD).
Unlike Technical Committees within AIAA, members of an IC need
not be AIAA members. This allows ICs to properly execute the
cross-disciplinary and cross-organizational aspects of their mission.
Leadership and Subcommittees
Leadership
The IC is led by a chair, vice-chair, and secretary.
Primary Subcommittees
Stewardship of the 2030 Vision
-
Tracks and updates evolving stakeholder needs as they relate to the 2030 Vision (e.g.
OEMs, government customers).
-
Tracks and updates evolving technology drivers as they may impact the 2030 Vision
(e.g. digital twin, certification by analysis).
-
Validates progress toward the 2030 Vision’s objectives through identification of
challenge problems and workshops organized to pursue the challenge problems.
Roadmap Assessment and Update
-
Responsible for individual Elements of the CFD Technology Roadmap including high
performance computing (HPC), Physical Modeling, Algorithms, Geometry and Grid
Generation, Knowledge Extraction, and MDAO.
-
Assesses progress on the Roadmap based on progress and new developments.
-
Evaluates research needs for each Element, especially those that are lagging.
-
Identifies new Elements for inclusion in the roadmap.
-
Maintains the Elements including creation of Working Groups, Discussion Groups,
Special Sessions, etc. as needed.
-
Writes and publishes 5-year progress papers on each Element.
Outreach for 2030 Vision
-
Promotes the Vision and activities of the IC within AIAA and the broader CFD
community.
-
Promotes events at conferences (e.g. special sessions, Forum 360, etc.)
-
Maintains the IC’s website, creates and distributes promotional materials, white
papers, etc.
Administrative Subcommittees
Membership
-
Establishes a membership policy for the IC (i.e. number of members, representation,
membership terms, etc.).
-
Maintains the IC roster including assignments to Subcommittees and Working Groups.
-
Promotes membership in the IC.
-
Solicits new members who will be active and fill needs within the IC.
-
Assists the Chair with new member enrollment.
-
Identifies inactive members for potential removal from the IC.
Publications and Communications
-
Collects input from IC members for inclusion in the annual Year in Review
article for Aerospace America.
-
Compiles and edits the Year in Review article according to Aerospace America
standards and provides it to the Chair for final approval prior to submission.
Liaisons
- Maintains roster of Liaison representatives from/to other AIAA TCs and ICs, as well as
AIAA Workshops.
-
Coordinates with Liaison representatives at least semi-annually to review IC
activities/plans, review V2030 roadmap updates, and identify/confirm new
gaps/accomplishments in their respective disciplines. Review planned/desired special
sessions for coordination on activities.
-
Liaison members are expected to coordinate with their respective organizations
regarding V2030 IC activities and provide feedback, including identifying significant
work or progress in technical areas or topics that supports the Roadmap elements or
emerging technology needs for placement on the Roadmap. Review progress toward
Grand Challenge problems and advocate for further progress among their
organizations.
-
Liaisons from the IC to other relevant committees or organizations are appointed by the
Chair. Other committees may appoint Liaisons to the IC to participate in the Liaison
subcommittee. Both types of Liaisons are critical to enhancing the IC’s activities,
especially those of the Elements of the 2030 Vision Subcommittee.
Working Groups
In addition to these standing committees, the IC can establish Working Groups as needed by the
IC’s leadership. Working Groups will have a clearly defined objective and/or deliverable and
lifespan. Examples of Working Groups are running a challenge problem workshop, organizing a
Forum 360, and creating a Discussion Group on the status of numerical algorithms. Working
Groups may be comprised of both IC members and non-members as the need dictates. Working
Group participation, while encouraged, is not required. Members may participate on more than
one Working Group. Working Group procedures are the same as Subcommittee procedures.
